Overview

The NH GRANIT Data Mapper is a web-based mapping tool offering New Hampshire's communities, agencies and organizations, and the general public access to a comprehensive collection of geospatial data archived in GRANIT. Our hope is that the data and related tools will be utilized to inform and expand decision-making at the local, regional, and statewide levels.

Pop-up Blockers

Pop-up blockers prevent new windows from automatically opening when you use a website. In many cases, these pop-up windows contain advertising information and can be aggravating for the user.

However some websites, such as the NH GRANIT Data Mapper, use pop-up windows to convey pertinent information to the user. The NH GRANIT Data Mapper uses pop-up windows to report information when the user queries the data, and thus pop-up blockers should be disabled when using this site.

Pop-up blocker options can generally be found in the browser toolbar, or the Tools menu. Below are instructions for disabling pop-up blockers in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Toolbars and Yahoo Toolbars.

Internet Explorer:

Click the yellow bar above, and choose Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site...

If this option is not available, use the following 3 steps to disable your pop-up blocker:

1. Go to Tools/Pop-up Blocker/Pop-up Blocker Settings ...

2. Enter mapper.granit.unh.edu in the Address of Web site to allow: field and click Add

3. Close the Pop-up Blocker Settings window

Firefox:

Click the Options button in the yellow bar above, and choose Allow popups for mapper.granit.unh.edu

If this option is not available, use the following 4 steps to disable your pop-up blocker:

1. Go to Tools/Options...

2. Click on Content, and then Allowed Sites

3. Enter mapper.granit.unh.edu in the Address of web site: field and click Allow

4. Close the Allowed Sites - Popups window

Google:

1. In the Google Toolbar, hover over the pop-up blocker button

2. If the tool tip states "Click this button to always allow popups on mapper.granit.unh.edu" as seen in the above graphic, then click the button

Yahoo:

1. In the Yahoo Toolbar, click the arrow next to the button that looks like an explosion

2. Choose Always Allow Pop-Ups From ...

Anticipated Audience/Users

The Mapper has been developed to support communities by providing maps and analysis typically incorporated in community master plans. It offers a significant technical resource to the many rural communities in the state with small or no planning staff. But it also offers a valuable resource to larger communities by providing the capacity to view and query data at a multi-community or regional level.

Acknowledgments

Initial funding for the NH GRANIT Data Mapper was provided by the NH GIS Conservation Collaborative (New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, Pardoe Foundation, Public Service of New Hampshire, Sweet Water Trust) and the UNH Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space.

NH GRANIT System

The New Hampshire Geographically Referenced Analysis and Information Transfer System (NH GRANIT) is a cooperative project to create, maintain, and make available a statewide geographic database serving the information needs of state, regional, and local decision-makers. A collaborative effort between the University of New Hampshire and the NH Office of Energy and Planning, the core GRANIT System is housed at the UNH Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space in Durham. It includes a geographic database, hardware and software to build, manage, and access the database, and a staff of experts knowledgeable in geographic information systems, image processing, and computer analysis. In addition to database development and maintenance, the GRANIT staff offers a range of application development, training, and related technical services to GIS users in the state and the region.

The GRANIT approach to a statewide GIS depends upon the cooperative efforts of a host of agencies, collaborating on various elements of database design and construction as well as application development. The collaboration occurs formally through the NH GIS Advisory Committee, and informally through daily interactions between the growing body of GIS users in the state and the region.

Why do layers appear/disappear from the Layer Menu?

Q: Why am I not seeing the results window when I use the selection or identify tools?

A: Pop-up blockers can prevent the results window from displaying. Be sure your pop-up blocker is turned off when using the NH GRANIT Data Mapper. For more information about disabling pop-up blockers click here.

Q: How can I get more information about the data layers in the Layer Menu?

A: Metadata, or "data about data", are available for all of the datasets used in the NH GRANIT Data Mapper. To access the metadata, click on the layer name in the Layer Menu.

Q: Why do layers appear/disappear from the Layer Menu?

A: Some layers are added/removed from the Layer Menu at certain scales. This feature insures that layers are displayed at scales appropriate for the source data resolution/feature density. Click on the layer name in the Layer Menu or the layer icon for viewable scale information.

Q: Why can't I identify or select a feature on the map?

A: Before you can identify or select features, you must choose which layer(s) you are interested in by checking the ACTIVE box next to the layer(s) in the Layer Menu, and then clicking the APPLY button.

Q: Can I download data?

A: You cannot download data directly from the NH GRANIT Data Mapper at this time, but many data layers are available to download from the main GRANIT website. For layers that are available to download, a link to the data on the main GRANIT website is provided in the metadata, which is accessed by clicking on the layer name in the Layer Menu. In the future, the NH GRANIT Data Mapper will include direct download capability.

Q: The legend gets cut off in the Layers Tab and/or in my printable map. Why is this?

A: This is a known software issue that can not be corrected at this time. The software vendor is aware of the problem, and GRANIT staff will fix the legend as soon as a solution is available.
